(a) Data in red show average counts of c-fos-labeled neurons for subjects who received neither the 4-week sound exposure from birth stimulus nor subsequent 2 kHz tone stimulation (199 samples from 5 subjects). Data for subjects having the neonatal exposure and then no additional sound stimulation are plotted in blue (249 samples from 5 subjects). Error bars show SEM. There is no significant difference in cell count in the estimated 2 kHz region (b) or over the entire region of interest (ROI; c).
