HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitors Attenuate Neuronal Damage by Suppressing Oxygen Glucose Deprivation-Induced Activated Microglial Cells

Rosuvastatin and atorvastatin decreased the number of microglia and reduced the decrease in neurons in MCAO rats. Ischemic injury resulted in increased numbers of Iba-1-positive cells and decreased numbers of neurons in the peri-infarct area cortex by immunofluorescence assays. Numbers of Iba-1 positive cells (cells/mm³) are expressed as compared to the sham group (, , and ) and to the MCAO group (, ), while numbers of NeuN-positive cells are expressed as compared to the sham group (, ) and to the MCAO group (, ). These values were assessed by one-way ANOVA followed by LSD test (homogeneity of variance was determined); .
