Inflammation and Age-Related Neurodegenerative Disorders: New Avenues for Early Diagnosis and Therapeutic Interventions

Call for Papers

Current statistical analyses show that 3% of the global population suffers from neurological disorders. Because neurodegenerative diseases strike primarily in mid- to late-life, the incidence is expected to soar as the population ages. Therefore, finding treatments and cures for neurodegenerative diseases is a goal of increasing urgency. Over the last few decades, intense research on the multiple fronts advanced our understanding of neurodegenerative diseases. The aggregation of specific proteins is hypothesized to underlie several degenerative diseases, which are collectively known as amyloid disorders. However, the mechanistic connection between the process of protein aggregation and tissue degeneration is not yet fully understood. Our knowledge on the role of neuroinflammation and neuroimmune interactions in the etiology of neurological disorders has increased over the last decade, but therapeutic and diagnostic interventions using this knowledge have not been widely reported.

The aim of this special issue is to highlight the global research efforts aimed at finding causes, developing cures, and identifying ways that are appropriate for early diagnosis and solutions that can alleviate the symptoms and lessen the social and economic impact of age-related neurodegenerative disorders. For this Special Issue we hope to attract original research articles, as well as review articles, which explore novel mechanisms involving amyloid toxicity, dysfunction of gut-brain homeostasis, blood brain breach, and activation CNS resident innate immune cells by infiltrating T cells. Also, we hope to attract studies aimed at discovering genetic predisposition biomarkers for early diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases. We invite articles from Neuroscientists addressing the below mentioned topics.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Structure-based therapeutic development for clearing the amyloid plaques
  • Targeting protein aggregation for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases
  • Discovery of antibody therapeutics for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases
  • Mechanistic studies highlighting the involvement of leaky gut in the development neurodegenerative disorders
  • Complement, a target for therapy in inflammatory and degenerative diseases
  • Mitochondrial dysfunction in aging and age-related neurodegenerative diseases
  • Prion-like polymerization in immunity and inflammation
  • Mammalian prions and their wider relevance in neurodegenerative diseases
