A Nonpolar Blueberry Fraction Blunts NADPH Oxidase Activation in Neuronal Cells Exposed to Tumor Necrosis Factor-α

Figure 3

Nonpolar and polar blueberry fractions are not cytotoxic. Serum-free cultures of SH-SY5Y cells were supplemented with 5, 30, and 75 μg/mL of nonpolar blueberry fraction (NPBB) or polar blueberry fraction (POBB) for 48 h. Cell viability was measured using an MTT assay, and all values were normalized to control (CON). Neither NPBB nor POBB blueberry fractions compromised cell viability compared to our positive control (H2O2, 48 h). Notably, all NPBB or POBB concentrations tested potently negated ROS formation in SH-SY5Y cells exposed to TNFα (200 ng/mL) or PMA (400 ng/mL). Data represent the mean of eight independent experiments ± standard deviations, and statistical significance was determined at * (ANOVA and Tukey’s post hoc analysis).
