Accelerated Aging during Chronic Oxidative Stress: A Role for PARP-1

PARP-1 can influence telomere length regulation in two different ways. First, it can enhance DNA repair, protect the telomeres, and contribute to a decrease in the rate of telomere shortening. Second, it can enhance the inflammatory response by activating NF-κB or AP-1, which will lead to more oxidative DNA damage which in turn could accelerate telomere shortening.
