Major Components of Energy Drinks (Caffeine, Taurine, and Guarana) Exert Cytotoxic Effects on Human Neuronal SH-SY5Y Cells by Decreasing Reactive Oxygen Species Production

EDs are highly caffeinated beverages which may contain herbal supplements, alkaloids from different plants, vitamins, or even amino acids. In some cases, the addition of herbal supplements (e.g., guarana) can increase the caffeine content of these beverages (*). For our in vitro study, we selected caffeine, taurine, and guarana as major components of EDs.
