The Cardioprotective Effects of Hydrogen Sulfide in Heart Diseases: From Molecular Mechanisms to Therapeutic Potential

Figure 1

Biosynthesis pathways of endogenous H2S. Cystathionine--synthase (CBS) and cystathionine--lyase (CSE) use L-cysteine as a substrate to produce H2S. However, 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase (3-MST) uses 3-mercaptopyruvate (3-MP) as a substrate to form H2S. 3-MP is produced by cysteine aminotransferase (CAT) from L-cysteine in the presence of -keto glutarate (-KG); on the other hand, it is also produced by D-amino acid oxidase (DAO) from D-cysteine.
