(c) Section of the optic nerve head of an aged rat after oral supplementation with α-lipoic acid (ALA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) (24 months, positive control). Here, a smaller papillary excavation and a good columnar shape typical of astrocyte cells were highlighted compared to the section in panel (b).
