Antioxidant-Enhancing Property of the Polar Fraction of Mangosteen Pericarp Extract and Evaluation of Its Safety in Humans

Figure 3

Effect of oral administration of ME on antioxidant capacity of RBCs. RBCs were isolated from the peripheral blood of the subjects at 0, 1, 4, 12, 16, and 24 weeks after beginning oral administration of ME. Hydrogen peroxide was an exogenous ROS used to stimulate the response of the RBC antioxidant system. (a) A representative measurement of the level of ROS within the RBCs which was determined by the mean fluorescent signal of DCF emitted from hydrogen peroxide-incubated RBCs. (b) Quantitative analysis of the mean fluorescent signal of DCF from all samples during the entire period of the study. Data are presented as means (). Error bars represent SEM. The asterisk indicates statistical significance: in comparison with week 0 (-test).
