Age and Environment Influences on Mouse Prion Disease Progression: Behavioral Changes and Morphometry and Stereology of Hippocampal Astrocytes

<div>Experimental timeline. Young adult (6 months old) and aged (18 months old) female albino Swiss mice were maintained for 5 weeks either in enriched or in standard cages and then subjected to injections of normal or ME7 infected brain homogenates and returned to their original cages. After 17 weeks after injections they were submitted to placement and identity object recognition tests, euthanized, and had their brains processed for selective GFAP, PrPSc, and IBA1 immunolabeling.</div>
