Gene expression of eNOS and NADPH oxidase in the kidneys from animals treated for 4 or 12 weeks. Gene expression of both eNOS and p22-phox (subunit of NADPH oxidase) was increased in diabetic animals after 4 weeks of treatment (animals were 12 weeks old) (a, b). Treatment with A(1–7) reduced the expression of both of these markers. No significant differences in gene expression of eNOS and p22-phox were detected in animals treated for 12 weeks (20 weeks old).
