Mitochondrial Antioxidants and the Maintenance of Cellular Hydrogen Peroxide Levels

Mitochondrial are a sink for cellular hydrogen peroxide. The function of mitochondria as a cellular ROS stabilizer depends on the rate of H2O2 production () and consumption (). Accumulation of cellular H2O2 serves as an important signal, which can be desensitized by mitochondrial antioxidant defenses. The rate of H2O2 uptake by the mitochondria () is dependent on the redox buffering capacity of the matrix.
