Nitric oxide influences HSV-1 replication. (a) Primary neuronal cultures and (b) primary glial cultures and (c) C8-D1A astrocyte cell line were subjected to treatment with the NO donor (SNP) or the inhibitor of iNOS (AMG) for 24 h and harvested for determination of HSV-1 DNA copies by PCR. (d) Numbers of HSV-1 DNA copies in the trigeminal ganglia (TG) and brains obtained at day 5 post intranasal infection with HSV-1 with or without treatment with AMG (100 mg/kg) were assessed by PCR.
