Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Alpha-Lipoic Acid: Beneficial or Harmful in Alzheimer’s Disease?

Cells treated with α-LA when subjected to oxidative or ischemic damage present higher expression of Blc-2 genes, modulating apoptotic pathways; sirt1 which induces peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor 1α (PGC-1α) and, therefore, mitochondrial biogenesis in the nucleus, positively regulates the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor-2 (Nrf2) pathway, improving the Nrf2 complex and antioxidant response elements (ARE), inducing the expression of genes that participate in mitochondrial homeostasis.
