Sodium Sulfite Exacerbates Allograft Vasculopathy and Affects Tryptophan Breakdown in Murine Heterotopic Aortic Transplantation

Immunohistochemical staining for α-SMA revealed a significant increase in positive-stained cells in the intima of all allogeneic aortic grafts on postoperative day 100, regardless of treatment given to the recipient, compared to syngeneic grafts. In the sodium sulfite (0.1 M) treatment group, a significant increase even compared to allogeneic, untreated controls was observed.
