The Fenton reaction and Haber-Weiss reaction. Catalytic iron can react with oxygen to generate ROS such as hydroxyl radical and hydrogen peroxide, which are implicated in lipid peroxidation and tissue damage through the Fenton reaction. The Haber-Weiss reaction in cells can produce hydroxyl radical (ā‹…OH) from H2O2 and superoxide (ā‹…O2-), which is an important source of oxidative stress.
