Peroxisome Deficiency Dysregulates Fatty Acid Oxidization and Exacerbates Lipotoxicity in β Cells

Hypothesis schematic. A unifying hypothesis depicting the cascade of events in response to Pex14 KD that result in oxidative stress and programmed cell death in β cells. We speculate that Pex14 KD inhibits peroxisome biogenesis, which disturbs fatty acid oxidization, thus leading to lipid accumulation. Peroxisome deficiency also causes downregulation of catalase and Sod2, in turn H2O2 accumulation. H2O2 activates inflammatory factors and ERS, which in turn induces apoptosis and autophagy.
