Schematic drawings of retinal neuroepithelial cells in cell cycle and the first differentiated neuron, a retinal ganglion cell. In chick embryo, the retina is composed almost homogeneously of neuroepithelial cells on embryonic day 3 (E3). The retinal ganglion cells are born mainly at E4–6. S: S-phase; M: M-phase.
