EGFRvIII-dependent hierarchy of glioma stem-like cells (GS-cells). An EGFRvIII-expressing GS-cell at the apex of the cellular hierarchy in GBM can divide into EGFRvIII-positive and negative cells, thereby maintaining the EGFRvIII-positive GS-cell reservoir. Within a limited time frame, EGFRvIII-negative cells can regain EGFRvIII expression, an ability which is lost further downstream in the EGFRvIII-dependent hierarchy [69, 83, 98].
