Schematic overview of the steps involved in indirect cell labeling. First, imaging reporter gene expression is induced in vitro in host cells. Reporter gene expressing cells are harvested and injected into a subject. In a next step, the respective radiotracer is injected and imaging can be performed to determine the localization of the cells. Repetitive injection of the radiotracer allows for repetitive imaging and thus long-term visualization of the engrafted cells [106].
