A schematic diagram for differentiation, reprogramming, and transdifferentiation. Cells come down from totipotent stem cells to functional cells in the development process (differentiation) while differentiated cells are able to be reversed back to pluripotent state (reprogramming) by transcription factors or chemical cocktails. Using similar approaches, one type of functional cells can be directly converted to other functional cells (transdifferentiation).
