Human Umbilical Cord-Mesenchymal Stem Cells Survive and Migrate within the Vitreous Cavity and Ameliorate Retinal Damage in a Novel Rat Model of Chronic Glaucoma

Injection of Tenon’s capsule fibroblasts induced intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation. IOP was monitored for 9 weeks in the control (left) eyes and for 9 weeks following injection of Tenon’s capsule fibroblasts into the anterior chamber in the right eye of each COH and COH+hUC-MSC rat. The eyes that received Tenon’s fibroblasts via intracameral injection had significantly higher mean IOPs than did the control eyes (). No significant difference in the IOP profile was observed between ocular hypertensive eyes that received intravitreal hUC-MSC transplantation and the ocular hypertensive eyes that did not ().
