Anti-Inflammatory and Antimicrobial Actions of Vitamin D in Combating TB/HIV

Interferon-gamma (IFN- ) enhances the antimicrobial action of monocyte-derived macrophages (MDM) infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis only in vitamin D sufficient conditions. (a) MDM differentiated in the presence of vitamin D significantly inhibits MTB growth in response to postinfection IFN- (200 IU/mL) treatment. This scenario represents the logical physiological process of infection response under vitamin D sufficient conditions. (b) However, pretreatment of MDM with IFN- (200 IU/mL) for 48 hr before infection and during infection in vitamin D deficient conditions does not enhance the response to vitamin D treatment after infection.
