Simplified chart for the metabolism of monopropylene glycol (MPG). Oxidation of propylene glycol by alcohol dehydrogenase (ALDH) leads to primarily lactate production. Epileptic-like activity results if the lactate goes into gluconeogenesis, and astrocytes convert the glucose into glycogen (adapted and summarized from [5, 15]).
