Impact of Mobility and Sociality on Opportunistic Networking

Call for Papers

Opportunistic Networks (OppNets) are already a popular area in networking research with an expanding utilisation in areas such as smart cities, Internet of things, and cellular networks offloading. The performance of OppNets relies mainly on users’ mobility. It is in fact mobility that creates the opportunities for contacts and therefore for data forwarding. The mobility of these nodes is tightly coupled with human behaviour, as these mobile devices can communicate only when humans come into contact. This interrelation between technical aspects (related to protocols operation) and human social behaving has not been explored in depth yet and clearly impacts the performance of OppNets.

This special issue encourages high-quality submissions related to the impact of human mobility and social interactions on OppNets. In particular, it aims to examine the challenges that arise in considering this mobility and sociality in the evaluation, modelling, development, and practical implementation of new protocols and applications for improving the efficiency of Opportunistic Networks. Articles describing experimental results and mobility data obtained from real scenarios are also encouraged.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Social-aware modelling, design, and development of data dissemination algorithms
  • Context- and location-aware mobility models
  • Biological and social models
  • Social network analysis for Opportunistic Networks
  • Simulation and modelling of social and mobility aspects in Opportunistic Networks
  • Promoting cooperation and participation in Opportunistic Networks
  • Real experiences, case studies, and mobility traces
  • Mobile crowdsensing and urban sensing
  • Social-based applications: mobile social networking, context sharing, disability helping, and so on
  • Novel metrics for quantifying effects of mobility and sociality in OppNets
