Edge Intelligence for 6G-enabled Industrial Internet of Things

This issue is now closed for submissions.

Description

Sixth Generation (6G) networks are expected to bring networking technologies with high throughput, massive connections, and pervasive coverage, enabling the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) that requires ultra-low latency and ultra-high reliability, such as intelligent transportation systems and smart factories. Edge computing pushes computation resources to the edge of networks, away from cloud centers and close to data sources. Edge intelligence derives from the convergence of edge computing with the exploitation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies on distributed edge infrastructures and terminal devices. Edge intelligence fundamentally shortens data transmission delay, protects data privacy, and improves network security, which promotes the implementation of 6G-enabled IIoT. The edge intelligence for 6G-enabled IIoT has attracted widespread attention.

However, compared to the traditional cloud data center, distributed and heterogeneous edge infrastructures and devices are with limited computation, storage, and communication resources. The traditional machine learning paradigm is not capable of adapting to the diverse and complex practical 6G IIoT environment. Therefore, the design of edge intelligence to meet the requirements of 6G-enabled IIoT applications is still challenging.

This Special Issue invites academic and industry researchers engaged in edge intelligence for 6G-enabled IIoT, including technology, theory, services, architecture, and protocols. This Special Issue will provide a platform for researchers to present the latest research and to clarify the future directions of this exciting field. We welcome both original research and review articles.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:
