The Impact of Lifestyle Factors on Oral Health Conditions

Description

Oral health can be affected by several diseases, particularly caries, periodontal disease, and oral cancer. These diseases are multifactorial, meaning several interacting factors may be responsible. Factors possibly contributing to these diseases, directly or indirectly, include health status, diet, physical activity, smoking, microbiome, oral hygiene, and other dental and medical conditions. Moreover, several chronic and infectious diseases have oral manifestations due to lifestyle factors or it can heavily impact the dental community. Moreover, microparticles (e.g., in toothbrushes, toothpaste, chewing gum, etc.) and certain micro- and macro nutrients can impact oral health. The good news is that most of these factors can be prevented, avoiding any oral consequences. Altering lifestyle habits may appear simple. However, it is difficult and requires patience most of the time because it warrants specific attitude and behavioural changes. It may be unfamiliar, expensive, or time-consuming.

Lifestyle choices affect oral health, as well as the entire dental community. They are responsible for multiple challenges in dental practice, dental education, and infection control. It requires the development of public health strategies such as community water fluoridation, sugar reduction policies, smoking/tobacco cessation programs, school sealant programs, oral hygiene instruction, and oral health promotion. Multiple experiences and programs have been proven safe, effective, and reasonably priced. It is critical to know how these programs were planned, conducted, and evaluated to generalize them to other communities. Moreover, we need to increase the dental care and accessibility of dental practice to patients with special needs which are heavily affected by multiple lifestyle factors. As dental clinicians or dental leaders maintain high standards, we need to understand the relationship between oral health conditions and lifestyle factors. This understanding will improve our patient management as we treat the patients as whole individuals. It will also help us plan a successful campaign to raise our clinics’ standards and reduce the potential negative socio-economic impacts of these factors. It will maintain and protect the health of patients and dental practitioners. It will also minimize the possibility of spreading infection at dental clinics.

The aim of this Special Issue is to bring together original research and review articles discussing the impact of lifestyle factors on oral health conditions. We welcome submissions that include how these factors can affect the entire dental community.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • The role of lifestyle factors in the development of oral health conditions
  • The impact of lifestyle factors in dental management and practice
  • Dental programs and oral health promotion as a potential solution for current oral health conditions related to lifestyle factors
  • The impact of lifestyle factors on patients with special needs and the accessibility of dental practice
  • Changes in infection control practice to respond to changes in the dental community
  • The oral manifestations and characteristics of several diseases due to lifestyle factors
  • The impact of chronic and infectious diseases in the dental community
  • Attitude and behaviours on oral habits such as toothbrush, toothpaste, and chewing gum
  • The impact of micro- and macro nutrients on oral health.
  • The potential toxic effects of dental and other products on the oral cavity (e.g., toothbrush, toothpaste and chewing gum)
