Biomedical Data Integration, Modeling, and Simulation in the Era of Big Data and Translational Medicine

Description

Advances in high-throughput technologies, especially next generation sequencing, have generated massive amounts of biological and medical data. To take full advantage of these data and to extract as much information and knowledge from them as possible, we face many challenges, such as (1) the storage and integration of both biological and medical data, as well as the development of big data technologies and infrastructures to handle these data; (2)the modeling and simulation of the data at a systems network level; (3) the collection of paired biological and personalized medical data to reconstruct personalized models for the precise diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of complex diseases.

To overcome these challenges and promote the application of informatics to translational research, we invite investigators to contribute original or review articles which focus on the state of the art in data exchange, data integration, and large-scale simulation of solutions for translational medicine. We would appreciate contributions that demonstrate (or even evaluate) the usefulness of their approach and at the same time demonstrate the scale of problem that they solve and the scale of compute infrastructure (or data) that they require. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • High performance computing, cloud computing, and big data technology in biomedical research
  • High-throughput data analysis for diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of complex diseases
  • Biomedical signal processing, biomedical image analysis, text mining, and network reconstruction applied to biomarker identification for complex diseases
  • Systems level modeling, simulation, and data integration for translational medicine
  • Software tools for visualization of complex high-dimensional data in personalized medicine
