Ocular Comorbidities and the Relationship between Eye Diseases and Systemic Disorders

Description

There is increasing evidence of a higher prevalence of medical comorbidities in patients with eye diseases such as dry eyes, glaucoma, uveitis, retinopathies, and optic neuropathies, which covers up to 2/3 of all ocular pathologies. In most cases the comorbidity has a major impact on the choice of therapy than the primary ophthalmic disorder. Many pathogenic mechanisms to account for the coexistence of ocular and systemic comorbidities remain unknown. Currently there is an increased demand for novel strategies to improve ophthalmic patients managing and to preserve vision.

We plan to launch this special issue to assess whether and to what degree ocular and systemic comorbidities affect patient health and visual outcomes as well as the quality of life related to vision. We deal with encouraging and publishing innovative diagnosis and algorithms and novel therapies to find the most accurate resolution of all these complex ocular comorbidities in a time efficient manner.
