Multiscale Flow and Optimal Production Control Techniques in Smart Unconventional Reservoirs

Description

Unconventional reservoirs, including shale, coal, and tight sandstone reservoirs, are widely distributed and abundant in the world. This is an important field for the strategic replacement and development of oil and gas resources. Multiphase and multiscale flow in unconventional reservoirs is complex. The structure of different scale media, such as nano-pores, natural fractures, and induced-fracture network, are also difficult to describe. Flow behavior cannot be simulated by conventional theory. At the same time, driven by information technology such as big data, cloud computing, and the internet of things, smart oilfield development has become an indispensable research focus.

However, multiscale media in unconventional reservoirs leads to a large number of calculations in flow simulation, which cannot be applied to theoretical simulation of field scale. Similarly, optimal production control techniques for conventional reservoirs cannot be applied to unconventional reservoirs. Therefore, it is necessary to propose new methods for multi-scale flow and optimal production control techniques to improve calculation efficiency in smart unconventional reservoirs.

This Special Issue aims to present recent advances in various subjects addressing new multiscale flow and optimal production control techniques in smart unconventional reservoirs. We invite investigators to contribute new work that will explore as many aspects as possible in the modelling of smart unconventional reservoirs.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Induced fracture description of primary fracturing or re-fracturing
  • Porosity and permeability characterization of unconventional reservoirs
  • Reservoir Evaluation
  • Micro-scale or Multi-scale flow simulation
  • Multiphase flow and Flowback simulation
  • Advances in EOR for unconventional oil/gas reservoirs
  • Reservoir data matching and prediction
  • Well production optimization
  • High-performance computing, algorithms, and simulation methods
  • Automatic well monitoring and control technologies
