The Cardiorenal Syndrome

Description

Renal dysfunction is highly prevalent in patients with heart failure. Furthermore, worsening renal function in patients with acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF), the so-called cardiorenal syndrome, impacts short- and long-term morbidity and mortality. In the recent years, more evidence has surfaced from clinical trials and heart failure registries that a complex crosstalk between the kidney and heart in patients with ADHF exists. Meanwhile, management of patients presenting with ADHF and concomitant renal dysfunction continues to be challenging. Therefore, understanding the interaction of the heart and kidneys is pivotal in tailoring therapy of these patients. This special issue will focus on the definition, pathogenesis, implications, and therapy of this complex condition.

We are particularly interested in papers, including research and review articles, that discuss the pathogenesis of “organ crosstalk” between the kidney and heart, the role of biomarkers that can differentiate cardiorenal syndrome from other causes of acute kidney injury, and novel therapeutic approaches to the treatment of this condition. Furthermore, papers that explore the epidemiology and overall impact of the condition on morbidity and mortality are requested. Main topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Epidemiology and overall impact of the cardiorenal syndrome on morbidity and mortality
  • Pathogenesis of the cardiorenal syndrome focusing on mechanisms of organ “crosstalk”
  • Novel biomarkers for the differentiation of cardiorenal syndrome from other causes of AKI
  • Biomarkers for the prognosis and grading of severity of the cardiorenal syndrome
  • Therapeutic option for the management of the cardiorenal syndrome
