An Artificial Neural Network-Based Pest Identification and Control in Smart Agriculture Using Wireless Sensor Networks

Table 6

Major pests of tomatoes.

PestDamage done

Fruit borerThe larvae scrape tomato leaves until the early or late stages of the second instar. The fruit is rendered unmarketable since the larvae have eaten its flesh.
ThripsTo get the tomato spotted wilt virus to feed on tomatoes, thrips pierce the plant’s outer layer with their mouthparts and suck the plant’s cells. This results in white or brown blotches on the leaves, indicating the plant’s cell death location.
Corn earwormTake care during feeding, as an injury to half of an animal’s ear might occur before larval growth is finished.
WhiteflyFeed on leaves and cause yellowing and curling and glossy or blackened leaves by creating honeydew on them.
AphidsThe plant’s young leaves are curled and sucked, weakening them till it eventually dies.
LeafhopperPlants get stunted, and their leaves become covered in yellow triangles (“hopper burn”).
Tomato psyllidTo remove the surplus water and sugar, psyllids inject stylets into the plant and suck the sap out of the plant.
Tomato russet miteRemove the contents of the cells in the leaves, stems, and fruit that you have harvested. Leaves become golden in hue and eventually perish.
