Nanomaterials for Sustainable Development: the UN 2030 goals

Description

The United Nations member states adopted an agenda for sustainable development to be achieved by the year 2030. A total of 17 global goals were set to attain sustainable development and nanomaterials have a key pivotal role to play in these goals. Nanotechnology is seeing exponential growth in many fields and is predicted to have robust future developments. The size and shape of nanomaterials vary significantly which means they have numerous applications in almost all fields. Significant lifestyle transformation has been achieved with the progress of nanomaterials research and applications.

The electronic industry has seen a paradigm shift with the development of nanostructured materials in the last 70 years. Monitoring health with tiny sensors allows more comfortable and personalized treatments for patients without. Better conversion of sunlight with nanomaterials incorporated into solar panels paves the way for the fight against climate change, and applications of nanomaterials in batteries have shown greater energy storage. Nanotechnology enables the packing of foods with a longer shelf-life and improved freshness. Additionally, nanomaterials can be used in pollution control and wastewater treatment, making water accessible to all. Not limited to the above fields, nanomaterials and nanotechnology have many applications in every field of science and engineering, leading to greater technological advancements. With tremendous in almost all fields, nanomaterials stand unique and for many are a top priority area research.

This Special Issue will focus on nanomaterials and nanotechnology for sustainable development with a focus on the UN 2030 agenda. The potential topics mentioned below will address the UN 2030 agenda goals 3, 6, 7, 9, and 13. Original research and review articles are welcome.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Nanomaterials: growth, properties, and applications
  • Nanomaterials for optical and electronic applications
  • Applications of nanomaterials in environmental remediation
  • Nanomaterials for food and agriculture
