Recent Advances in Synthesis and Coatings of Nanocomposites

Description

Composites are a combination of two or more materials yielding properties superior to those of the individual components. Interdisciplinary research in composites/nanocomposites is being widely researched and the characterization of existing metal/ceramic/polymer matrix composites as well as the development of improved composites has applications in a variety of different fields. In particular, studies focusing on the long-term durability of composites used in the microelectronic and the oil and gas industries are increasingly emerging and novel polymer/ceramic superconductor composites for use in optical sensors is also a developing area of research.

There are a number of areas of research within this field that require further investigation. This includes investigation of the properties and process of metallic nanocomposites that exhibit a combination of low thermal expansion and high electrical and thermal conductivities. Investigation on room temperature and elevated temperature performance of metal matrix composites also needs to be carried out for use of such composites in structural applications. The application of nanomaterials (i.e. 1-100 nanometers size) for use in bumpers on cars, metal cutting tools, high energy density rechargeable batteries, solar cells and fuel cells also requires further exploration.

This Special Issue encourages collaborative research from various engineering disciplines to advance research in the composite industry as outlined above. We also welcome world-class research at the interface between different disciplines to synthesize new materials and coating processes that deliver high performance and affordability. Both original research and review articles are welcome.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Electrodeposition coatings
  • Surface treatments for wear resistance
  • Surface modification for additive manufacturing
  • Functional polymer coatings
  • Coatings and surface modification of nanocomposites
  • Friction and corrosion properties
  • Growth, properties, and applications of nanocomposites
  • Dental materials and coatings
  • Development of smart materials
  • Development of hybrid composites
