Applications of Nanobiomaterials in Tissue Repair 2021

Description

With the rapid development of nanotechnology and a deeper understanding of the interaction of materials and cells, nanobiomaterials have attracted more and more attention in the field of tissue repair. It has been well recognized that by benefiting from various unique characteristics, nanobiomaterials will play an increasingly important role in this field.

For tissue repair, imitating the composition and structural characteristics of natural tissues and organs, using bionics principles and nano-self-assembly techniques to develop intelligent bionic scaffolds with specific functions has become a frontier topic. Nanobiomaterials demonstrate irreplaceable advantages in this respect because most of the natural tissues and organs are nanostructured. Simultaneously, the high ratio of surface area to volume helps nanobiomaterials achieve large adsorption capacity and chemical activity, which increases the efficiency of cellular functions. Compared with traditional biomaterials, nanobiomaterials have great potential to offer more efficient use of loaded drugs and nucleic acids or other biological factors to accelerate and engender tissue repair and regeneration. Using nanoparticles as fillers can improve inadequate mechanical properties to meet the demand for specific tissue repair. In addition, some nanobiomaterials imparted with electrical, optical, magnetic, or antimicrobial properties can satisfy the requirement for the regeneration of some special tissues such as cardiac, neural, and skin tissues. However, the biocompatibility and toxicity of nanobiomaterials are still controversial, and the interaction mechanisms between nanobiomaterials and cells as well as the structure-property relationships are still ambiguous. Additional research still needs to be carried out to solve these problems.

The aim of this Special Issue is to collate original research articles and review articles that inspire continuous efforts to broaden the scope of application of nanobiomaterials in tissue repair. We are particularly interested in articles describing the structure-property relationships, nanobiomaterials and cell interaction, novel nanobiomaterial design, biocompatibility, and toxicity improving protocol, as well as nanobiomaterial degradation.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • The interaction mechanism between different nanobiomaterials and different cells
  • Structure-property relationships with a focus on how the size, shape, and surface chemistry of nanobiomaterials lead to effective tissue repair
  • The relationship between structure and mechanical properties of nanobiomaterials
  • Construction of an ideal cell-nanobiomaterials interface
  • Design and construction of nanopatterns and micro-nano structure
  • Construction of bionic structure
  • Improvement of the biocompatibility of nanobiomaterials
  • Nano-controlled release drug delivery system applied in tissue repair
  • Design of multifunctional nanocomposites for tissue repair
