pACSF induces an NMDA-dependent persistent increase in NSI_cell, but not NSI_time. The same data as Figures 1(c) and 1(d) and data of perfusion with pACSF in the presence of 50 𝜇M AP5 were analyzed with the NSI_cell (a), NSI_time(b), %SI_cell (c), and %SI_time(d) indices (Control, 𝑁=5; pACSF, 𝑁=8; pACSF+AP5, 𝑁=4). (a) and (b) pACSF-induced increase in NSI_cell persisted after replacement with normal ACSF, an effect that was prevented by AP5, whereas pACSF-induced increase in NSI_time was recovered to the pre-pACSF baseline level after pACSF washout. (c) and (d) show that neither %SI_cell nor %SI_time detected pACSF-induced plastic changes. Data are means ±SEMs.
