Energy Dissipation Systems for Seismic Vibration-Induced Damage Mitigation in Building Structures: Development, Modeling, Analysis, and Design
Description
Structures may severely vibrate and even collapse when subjected to strong earthquake ground motions. The major challenge in today’s civil/earthquake engineering is to mitigate seismic damage and design safer structures. Since the mid of the XX century, passive, semiactive, and active controlled systems have been proposed, tested, studied, and optimized to mitigate earthquake induced effects upon structures. Their effectiveness in reducing structural vibrations and response and mitigating damage is nowadays worldwide recognized. Nonetheless, despite the large amount of research effort, the practical implementation of seismic protection devices in building structures is still limited to only a few countries (such as USA and Japan). This may be attributed to the fact that most of current building codes do not provide detailed design provisions for buildings incorporating dissipative systems thus indicating the need of a knowledge transfer between researchers and practitioners.
To cover this topic and to provide a well-documented reference in this field, authors are invited to submit their recent research results to this special issue.
Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:
- Physical/mechanical modeling, mathematical formulations, and numerical simulations of seismic dissipation systems
- Control device development including passive, semiactive, and active systems along with experimental verification
- Topology and sizing optimization of energy dissipation systems in civil structures
- Practical provisions and methods for the design of structures incorporating seismic dissipation systems
- Seismic risk, fragility, and reliability analyses of structures incorporating dissipative systems
- Cost-benefit analysis of structures incorporating dissipative systems and other related economic issues
- Proposals for next edition of seismic design codes for the practical implementation of dissipative systems
