Stability Analysis of Underground Spaces Suffering Dynamic Disturbance

This issue is now closed for submissions.

Description

As human society develops, an increasing number of underground spaces are being created to solve problems of economic construction in areas such as the mining industry and transportation infrastructure, among others. The main concern with regard to the success, safe construction, and operation of underground spaces is maintaining the stability of the surrounding rock mass.

In practice, underground spaces are inevitably subjected to dynamic loading, resulting from earthquakes, strata movement, mining activity, fault slip, machine vibration, etc. All these dynamic loads have a significant effect on the ground response of underground spaces, resulting in a series of new engineering problems, such as excavating dynamic behaviour, large deformation, rock burst, and support structure failure. As such, the problem of stability in underground spaces suffering dynamic disturbance has become increasingly prominent. In addition, we know that the ground response of underground spaces varies mainly depending on in situ stress, and geological and geotechnical conditions. Correspondingly, its stability principle and control strategy are also markedly distinct. Thus, for a specific underground space suffering dynamic disturbance, its failure mechanism should be determined based on the sufficient study of its surrounding properties, the magnitude and orientation of in situ stress, geological structures, and support design.

The aim of this Special Issue is to invite original research articles and reviews that highlight advances and breakthroughs in the stability problems of underground spaces suffering dynamic disturbance. We welcome both original research and review articles covering a wide scope of topics concerning underground spaces suffering dynamic disturbance, including geo-investigation, geomechanic analysis, design and modelling, and maintenance and rehabilitation of underground spaces.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Mechanical behaviour of rock under dynamic loads
  • Dynamic failure characteristics and constitutive properties of rock
  • Ground response of underground spaces suffering dynamic disturbance
  • Occurrence mechanisms of dynamic loads in underground engineering
  • Experimental or numerical simulation of the underground space analysis under dynamic loads
  • Prevention and control methods of instability problems in underground spaces suffering dynamic disturbance
