Advanced Functional Graded Materials: Processing and Applications

Description

Modern industries rely primarily on innovative materials or advanced functional graded materials (AFGMs) development for various demanding applications, including marine propulsion systems, vehicle internal combustion engines, and jet turbine engines. Magnesium, aluminum, and titanium alloys have also become more prevalent in aircraft. It was due to the development of new lightweight metal alloys and composites that matched mechanical property requirements and advancements in lightweight metal production technology. Fundamental scientific concerns relating to a wide variety of novel materials and the development of knowledge of using these materials in numerous applications are the focus of advanced materials and manufacturing processes research. Materials and production engineering are concerned with using materials and the processing and manufacturing of novel materials and techniques. The advancement of technology products in several disciplines, including energy generation, the automotive and aviation industries, medical devices, and communication, will be aided by research in these areas.

Currently, the AFGMs have received significant attention in automotive and aerospace applications. The necessity to reduce vehicle weight has prompted substantial study into developing AFGMs for structural automobile body parts in the automotive industry. In addition, the production of AFGMs results in several challenging issues like the design of the fabricating operations, the optimization of process parameters, the enriching of production outcomes, and eliminating the manufacturing damages to prepare the end products.

Thus, to highlight the latest developments in the synthesis and multifunctional applications of AFGMs, this Special Issue aims to solicit original research and review articles that highlight current research relevant to the automotive and aerospace applications of AFGMs.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Recent advancements and challenges of AFGMs and their applications
  • Materials synthesis and characterizations
  • Polymer matrix composites
  • Additive manufacturing of AFGMs
  • Nano/micro-fabrication of polymeric AFGMs
  • Structural and chemical characterization of AFGMs
  • Wear characterization of AFGMs, including dry and wet conditions
  • Machinability studies on metal matrix composites
  • Thermal and corrosive behavior of AFGMs
  • Machinability characterization and evaluation of AFGMs
  • AFGMs for aerospace and biomedical applications
