This study was conducted to reveal possible environmental effects on the Euphrates River from the Al-Hindiya barrage to the downstream end of Al-Kufa city in the middle of Iraq. Seven sites were selected along the study area and sampled during March 2004 to February 2005. We measured physical and chemical properties (air and water temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, TDS, TSS and dissolved oxygen) as well as, concentration and distribution of some heavy metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) in both dissolved and particulate phases, in the water and sediments (exchangeable and residual phases). The studied area was slightly alkaline, with very hard water and high BOD5. The nutrients showed clear seasonal fluctuations in their concentrations. It was shown that the concentrations of metals in the particulate phase were higher than those in dissolved phase in water. In sediments, the mean concentrations of heavy metals as exchangeable phase were less than in the residual phase.

A Study of Physicochemical Parameters and Nine Heavy Metals in the Euphrates River, Iraq

Corrosion inhibition efficiency of acid extract of dry Emblica officinalis leaves for mild steel in 1N HCl medium is investigated in the present study. Experimental methods include weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization and impedance studies. The results indicate Emblica officinalis leaves to be a good corrosion inhibitor of a mixed type and having efficiency of 87.9% at 2% v/v inhibitor concentration. Corrosion inhibition may be due to the spontaneous physical adsorption of the plant constituents on the mild steel surface. Experimental data fitted the Langmuir, Temkin, Freundlich and Flory-Huggins adsorption isotherms.

Emblica Officinalis (Indian Gooseberry) Leaves Extract as Corrosion Inhibitor for Mild Steel in 1N HCl Medium

The potential feasibility of mango leaves powder (MLP) (Mangifera indica) for removal of dye (Grey BL) from aqueous solution was investigated. The effects of various experimental parameters were examined and optimal experimental conditions were decided. Above the value of initial pH 7, the dye studied could be removed effectively. The isothermal data fitted the Langmuir model or Freundlich model. The adsorption processes followed the pseudo-first-order rate kinetics. The results in this study indicated that mango leaf powder (MLP) was an attractive candidate for removing dye from dye wastewater.

Removal of Dyes from Aqueous Solution by Adsorption on Biomass of Mango (Mangifera Indica) Leaves

This work deals with the study of corrosion behaviour for zinc in (HNO3+ H2SO4) binary acid mixture containing ethanolamines. Corrosion rate increases with concentration of acid and temperature. At constant acid concentration, the inhibition efficiency of ethanolamines increases with the inhibitor concentration. Value of &#916;Ga increases and inhibition decreases with temperature. The mode of inhibition action appears to be chemisorption.

Ethanolamines as Corrosion Inhibitors for Zinc in (HNO3+H2SO4) Binary Acid Mixture

A series of sydnone derivatives containing styryl ketone moiety, 4-[1-oxo-3-(substituted aryl)-2-propenyl]-3-(4-methylphenyl)sydnones (6a-i) has been synthesized and characterized by spectral data. The synthesized compounds have been screened for preliminary antibacterial activity by cup plate method and analgesic activity by the method of acetic acid induced writhing in mice. The chloro and nitro derivatives showed good antibacterial activity against both gram positive and gram negative bacteria while the chloro and furyl derivatives exhibited highest analgesic effect among the series.

Synthesis, Antibacterial and Analgesic Activities of 4-[1-Oxo-3-(substituted aryl)-2-propenyl]-3-(4-methylphenyl) sydnones

Antioxidant and hypolipidemic activity of the flovone glycoside isolated from Plumeria rubra L. was carried in alloxan induced hyperglycemic rats. The flavonoid treatment produced a significant reduction in the level of serum triglycerides, while there was no reduction in the serum cholesterol and glucose. Antioxidant activity of the drug was also confirmed through in vitro studies.
