Clara G. de los Reyes‐Gavilan obtained a Ph.D. degree in biology from the University of Oviedo, Asturias, Spain, in 1987. She is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Station de Researches Laitieres, Jouy‐en‐Josas, France. In 1988‐1990, she was Staff Tenured Scientist at Instituto de Productos Lácteos de Asturias, Spain. From 1991 to 2007, she was appointed as Staff Research Scientist at Instituto de Productos Lácteos de Asturias, Consejo Superior de Investigaciones CientÍficas (IPLA-CSIC), Villaviciosa, Asturias, Spain. From 2007 to present, she has been serving as Head of the Department of Microbiology and Biochemistry of Dairy Products at IPLA‐CSIC. From 2006 to 2009, she served as Deputy Director of IPLA‐CSIC. She was the Director of IPLA‐CSIC in 2009‐2012. Her areas of expertise include probiotics (mainly, but not exclusively, focused on the genus Bifidobacterium), intestinal microbiota, probiotics for specific groups of age, influence of stressing factors from the gastrointestinal tract in the physiology and probiotic properties of bifidobacteria, metabolism of prebiotics by bifidobacteria, exopolysaccharides from probiotic bacteria, and mechanisms of antibiotic resistance in lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria.
