Laerte G. Ferreira

Laerte G. Ferreira obtained a Ph.D. degree in soil and environmental science (the University of Arizona, USA). He works as an Associate Professor at the Federal University of Goiás (GO, Brazil) and the Head of the Image Processing and GIS Laboratory (LAPIG ). His research interests mostly focused on the use of moderate resolution satellite imagery for land use and land cover change. He serves as a Principal investigator in several international remote sensing projects, focused on both the Brazilian savanna (Cerrado) and Amazonia biomes. He acted as an advisor in technical committees to subsidize national policies for environmental conservation and agricultural expansion. He is currently a Member of the Science Steering Committee for the Brazilian Panel on Climatic Change. His most significant professional accomplishments include being the Head of the Multidisciplinary Doctoral Program in Environmental Science at the Federal University of Goiás from March 2006 to March 2008, Coordination of the world bank sponsored project Identification of Priority Areas for Biodiversity / Geodiversity Conservation in the State of Goias, the development of the Cerrado Warning Deforestation System (SIAD), and being the recipient of the 2010 Araguaia Environmental Commend award from the Goias State Assembly.
