Maria Stella Figueiredo obtained her MD degree at the Escola Paulista de Medicina/UNIFESP, Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 1982. In 1985, she completed her residency in the Hematology and Blood Transfusion Unit, also at the Escola Paulista de Medicina/UNIFESP. She obtained her M.S. degree in 1989 after studying the iron metabolism in patients with chronic kidney failure. She was appointed Professor of Hematology at the Escola Paulista de Medicina/UNIFESP, in 1990. In 1993, she obtained her Ph.D. degree with analysis of alpha-thalassemia and beta-globin gene haplotypes on sickle cell anemia in Brazilians patients. She realized a Sabbatical Year with Dr. Martin H Steinberg in the V.A. Medical Center at Jackson, MS, USA, from 1994 to 1995. From 2006 to 2012, she was the Head of Department of Hematology and Blood Transfusion Unit at the Escola Paulista de Medicina/UNIFESP. Dr. Figueiredo has published more than 40 publications on sickle cell anemia and on iron overload, in journals such as Haematologica, the American Journal of Hematology, British Journal of Haematology, Clinical Immunology, Blood cells molecules and diseases, Acta Haematologica, Annals of Hematology, Stroke, Brazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research, and Transfusion.
