Sergio Porta

Sergio Porta was born in Reggio Emilia, Italy, in 1964. He is a Professor of urban design, the Head of Department, and the Director of the Urban Design Studies Unit (UDSU) at the Department of Architecture, University of Strathclyde (UoS), Glasgow, UK. Together with Dr. Ombretta Romice, he holds the M.S. degree in urban design program to Year 5 students at UoS and teaches various classes including “Urban Design 1” at Year 4 and“Urban Theory” at Year 5. He is a Member of the Environmental Structure Research Group and the Academy of Urbanism. He sits in the editorial board of leading international journals like Environment and Planning B and Urban Design International. He is a Peer-Reviewer for a number of journals including European Physical Journal, Urban Studies, Urban Design International, Progress in Planning, International Journal of Urban Sustainable Development, Environment and Planning B, and Environment and Planning A. His research sits in three areas: urban morphology, street network analysis, and urban design. Overall, he is trying to set up a scientific approach to urban form production and evolution or “a science of the common sense” in urban design and construction as a matter of people/environment relations.
