Prof. Dr.Duran Canatan Pediatric Hematologist Duran Canatan is working as Director of Hemoglobinopathy Diagnosis Center at Mediterrenaean Blood Diseases Foundation in Antalya –Turkey. He is the president of Thalassemia Federation of Turkey and Mediterrenaean Blood Diseases Foundation in Antalya- Turkey. He is also Scientific Advisory of Haydar Aliyev Foundation and Thalassemia Center in Baku-Azarbaijan. He graduated from the Ankara University in 1979. He received his Associate Professor of Pediatric Hematology from Ankara University in 1993. He set up Thalassemia and Blood Center of Antalya State Hospital of Ministry of Health in 1994 and worked at there between 1994 and 2001. He worked Department of Pediatric Hematology and Blood Center of Suleyman Demirel University between 2001 and 2010. Duran Canatan’s research focuses on hemoglobinopathies especially thalassemia and sickle cell anemias as well as transfusion medicine. His research on thalassemia includes the investigation of transfusion problems and solves, iron chelation, antioxidants, osteoporosis. He has been nationally and internationally active in fields of thalassemia and hemoglobinopathies for 20 years. He has shown leadership in creating local and regional scientific interest group an associations that promote partnerships in science and dissemination of knowledge both to phsicians and community. He has been worked National Hemoglobinopathy Preventing Program at Ministry of Health as a member of scientific commitee, to prevent thalassemia and to set up thalassemia centers. He has published 150 peer-reviewed papers and more than 200 abstracts, which have presented at national an international congresses. In addition, he has delivered about 200 lectures at national and international conferences and symposia.
