Mitsuko Furuya was born in Bibai, Japan, in 1965. She received the M.D. and the Ph.D. degrees from the Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan in 1991 and 1999, respectively. From 1999 to 2000, Furuya was a medical staff at the Hokkaido University Hospital in Sapporo, Japan. From 2000 to 2002, she was a Guest Scientist at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg, Germany. From 2003 to 2007, Furuya was a Research Associate at the Chiba University, Chiba, Japan. Presently, she is an Associate Professor at the Yokohama City University, Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan. She is mainly interested in human pathology, gynecologic oncology, angiogenesis, and tumor microenvironment. Furuya is a Member of the Japanese Society of Pathology (Councilor), the Japanese Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Japanese Society of Clinical Cytology, the Japanese Cancer Association, and the European Society for Cancer Immunology and Immunotherapy. She has been a Member of the Editorial Board of Open Tissue Engineering & Regenerative Medicine since 2007 and served as a Managing Editor of Frontiers in Biosciences in 2009–2011.
