Mirja Hirvensalo

Mirja Hirvensalo, a holder of a Ph.D. degree, is a Professor of sport pedagogy and a Researcher at Gerontology Research Center (GEREC) at the University of Jyväskylä, Jyväskylä, in Finland. The main part of his research and development work consists of physical exercise and exercise counseling in older people. Hirvensalo is interested in exercise counseling as a means of preventing and slowing down disablement in older people. This information gives also possibilities of establishing models of good practice for exercise counseling in older people. Two large study projects are the basis of his research in older people. The first is the 16-year Evergreen study project concerned with the health, functional capacity, and use of services in older people. The other project is Screening and Counseling for Physical Activity and Mobility study. The study explicates the impact of 2-year counseling for physical activity on change in health behavior in physical activity and mobility. He has worked at National Institute of Aging, Bethesda, MD, USA, and represented Finland in a broad and highly active international cooperation network, the European Network for Action on Ageing and Physical Activity, EUNAAPA.
