I carried out my PhD at The University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK where I looked at the microbial communities associated with healthy and diseased reef-building corals of the Caribbean. Following my PhD I worked for two years at San Diego State University, USA, looking at the connections between coral reef water chemistry, coral reef health and microbial communities in the Caribbean and Northern Line Island. More recently I have been working at The University of Queensland, Australia looking at a the association of microbial communities and system health of a range of marine environments, from coastal bay environments to coral reefs; and have identified a new eukaryotic symbiont of a major reef-building coral on the Great Barrier Reef.
