Vamsi Krishna Balla

Vamsi Krishna Balla received his Ph.D. degree in metallurgical and materials engineering from IIT Madras, Chennai, India in 2005. He currently works as a Senior Principal Scientist at Bioceramics and Coating Division of Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute, Kolkata, India. Dr. Balla's current research concentrates on the application of solid freeform technologies towards various long standing challenges in metal and ceramic implants to increase their in vivo life time. Specific research areas include development of engineered porous metals/ceramics, compositionally / structurally graded coatings, laser processing alloys, and composites for biomedical and structural applications. Dr. Balla received Young Scientist Award from Punjab Academy of Sciences, India in 2002. He is the recipient of Sudarshan Bhatt Memorial Award for his masters (1998) and Ph.D. research (2005) at IIT Madras, India. He has served as a reviewer for more than 20 international scientific journals and funding agencies, and he was rated as excellent reviewer (top 20) for Metallurgical & Materials Transactions A in 2007. He also received the Best Technical Paper Award two times, from ARCI (2004) and AWS (2002). Dr. Balla published over 70 peer-reviewed journal articles, authored 3 book chapters, and filed 2 US patents. His work has been cited over 600 times and his current ‘h’ index is 16.
