Ivana Sirangelo was born in Naples, Italy, on April 8, 1963. She obtained her degree in biological sciences in 1988 at the University of Naples Federico II, Naples, Italy, the postdegree specialization in microbiology at the School of Medicine, University of Naples Federico II, and the Ph.D. degree in biochemical sciences at the Department of Biochemistry. She is a Visiting Scientist at the molecular biology laboratory of Professor J. Hershey in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine, School of Medicine, University of California, Davis, USA. Actually, Sirangelo is a Researcher at the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, School of Medicine, University of Naples Federico II. The scientific activity of Sirangelo has been focused on the biophysics of protein folding and conformational dynamics of peptides and proteins. The recent activity of Dr. Sirangelo is devoted to the physiopathology of misfolding diseases (amyloidosis). The fields of major interest are (i)characterization of the molecular mechanisms underlying amyloid fibril formation and effect of aggregating compounds; (ii) relationship between cytotoxicity and structure of amyloid aggregates; (iii) physiopathology of cell-amyloid interaction.
